SUMMARY:Ukraine\, Russia and the media
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nInformation coming out of Eastern Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine is like no other war before it with social media reporting almost in real-time. On top of that\, Putin’s regime uses propaganda and misinformation to steer the narrative. It’s a lot to sort out even for the most media savvy. \nThe Denver Press Club brings together three media professionals with experience in Russia and Ukraine. Mark Dillen is a Denver-based media consultant who once worked with the foreign service in Moscow and taught journalism in Ukraine as a Fulbright scholar. Ann Imse is a former AP Moscow correspondent\, who covered the collapse of the Soviet Union and travels to Russia to train journalists. Larry Ryckman is a former AP bureau chief in Moscow. The discussion will be led by Evan Wyloge\, a Colorado Springs Gazette reporter who has worked with Ukrainian journalists. \n \n Tickets

SUMMARY:Shawn Williams Presents the Music of Lee Morgan - A Gift of Jazz Production
DESCRIPTION:Shawn Williams Presents the Music of Lee Morgan\nThursday\, May 19th\, 2022 :: 6:00 PM\nLive at the Denver Press Club\n1330 Glenarm Pl\, Denver\, CO 80204\n\nPresented by:\nShawn Williams (trumpet)\, Austin Cebulske (tenor sax)\,\nTom Amend (piano)\, Seth Lewis (bass)\nand Bobby Wiens (drums)\n\nBuy tickets here\n \nShawn Williams is a jazz trumpeter\, composer\, arranger\, and educator currently serving as the professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Northern Colorado. Prior to moving to Colorado\, Shawn thrived in the San Francisco Bay Area where he established himself as an educator and performer. Shawn performed at the San Jose Jazz Festival\, the Stanford Jazz Festival\, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Most recently\, Shawn has performed with the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra and the Colorado Jazz Orchestra. In 2019\, Shawn was invited to join the United States Air Force Academy Band and Falconaires Jazz Ensemble on multiple tours in Colorado\, Alabama\, and Georgia. Shawn gained nationwide attention from his involvement with the National Trumpet Competition\, when he received third place in both 2015 and 2016. In 2012 and 2013\, Shawn held the jazz trumpet chair in the Glenn Miller Orchestra of which he travelled to forty-seven states\, Japan and Portugal. You can hear Shawn on many recent recordings\, including All in One (2018) featuring compositions by David Caffey\, and Time Child (2019) featuring trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and compositions by Erik Applegate. \nIt is impossible to talk about the history of jazz trumpet without mentioning Lee Morgan. Morgan’s exuberant and boisterous improvisational and compositional voice defined the sound of hard bop in the 1960’s. “The Sidewinder\,” a surprise hit\, topped the R&B charts in 1964 and was a Top 25 hit on the pop charts. A recording titan\, he cut over twenty albums as a leader and sideman between 1960 and 1970. Morgan’s ability to mix funky\, danceable grooves with compelling and lyrical improvisation was so new and fresh it firmly established him as a force to be reckoned with. Like many other musicians of his day\, Morgan struggled with drug addiction\, but kicked the habit before the release of “The Sidewinder.” Morgan’s death is almost as famous as his music in the jazz world. He died at the age of 33 after being shot by his common-law wife\, Helen More\, at Slug’s Saloon in New York. Lee Morgan inspired countless jazz musicians to incorporate R&B into their sounds and pushed jazz into new uncharted territories.

SUMMARY:Dr. Chang Hee Kim Speaks on Gene Editing- Co-Sponsored by the Harvard Club
DESCRIPTION:The New York Times columnist Ezra Klein wrote that when future generations look back at our time\, “Will everything just look like a sideshow compared to humans being able to edit the genetic code?” \nWe have recently embarked on an era that offers the potential of wondrous benefits\, including the elimination of deadly diseases and debilitating abnormalities. Someday it could offer both the promise and the peril of allowing us\, or some of us\, to boost our bodies and enhance our babies to have better muscles\, minds\, memories\, and moods. Learn about the promise and ethical dilemmas from an authority in the field who can explain the science in terms we can understand. \nPresenter Dr. Chang Hee Kim\, CEO of medical diagnotics company GoDx\, holds a PhD in biochemistry from Caltech\, has completed post doctoral work at Harvard on RNA biochemistry and at MIT on genome sciences. At the NIH he discovered genetic markers for both prostate and gastric cancer. Dr. JK Costello will be moderator.

SUMMARY:Sean McGowan presents the music of guitarist Wes Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Sean McGowan is a fingerstyle jazz guitarist who combines many diverse musical influences with unconventional techniques to create a broad palette of textures within his compositions and arrangements for solo guitar. His first recording River Coffee won the Best Independent Release of the Year Award (2002) from Acoustic Guitar magazine. As a soloist\, Sean has performed at several festivals including the Novi Sad International Jazz Festival in Serbia\, the Healdsburg Guitar Festival in Napa Valley\, Copper Mountain Guitar Town\, the La Conner Guitar Festival\, and many more. Sean is an avid arts educator and currently serves as Professor of Music and Chair of the Music & Entertainment Industry Studies department at the University of Colorado Denver\, one of the largest contemporary music programs in the country. \nThe history of jazz guitar and even jazz in general would not be the same if Wes Montgomery never picked up the instrument. A self-taught artist\, Montgomery’s style was full of innovative and unique techniques that quickly set him apart from his contemporaries\, even though he didn’t start playing the guitar until 19. After spending his early years imitating Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt\, his early idols\, Wes went on to innovate the language of jazz guitar. Through incorporating melodic chord substitutions\, fluent single note lines\, and his signature use of octaves\, Wes created an incredibly unique and recognizable sound that established him as the next step in the lineage of jazz guitar. Wes Montgomery’s influence can be heard in many jazz guitarists to this day. His joyful and welcoming style will undoubtedly be celebrated for years to come. \nA light taco bar buffet will be available at intermission for those who purchase specific dinner and show tickets. \n

SUMMARY:Wine Tasting\, in Collaboration with Denver Wine Merchant
DESCRIPTION:The Denver Press Club is excited to host the co-owners and resident sommeliers at Denver Wine Merchant for an evening of wine tasting accompanied by light cheese plates. \nSally Stewart is a Houston native born in Pennsylvania. Growing up with home cooked meals\, she developed a passion for food and beverage. She worked in restaurants since age 16 holding positions from line cook to sommelier. After graduating from the University of Houston\, life took her out west. There she met Steven and continued her path in wine. \nIn 2015 Sally and Steven set up a seasonal guest house in Casablanca\, Chile\, where they hosted travelers from nine countries. A stay included private winery tours and Sally’s cooking with wine pairings. \nAfter moving back stateside\, they spent time in Portland\, Oregon and then ended up in Telluride\, Colorado. In Telluride\, besides skiing nearly everday\, they worked full time as sommeliers for the resort. \nIn 2016 She and Steven moved to New York City. In her four years NYC\, she was a sommelier at Babbo and Cut by Wolfgang Puck\, and in 2018 she passed the Advanced Sommelier exam. In 2019 she was diagnosed with ALS\, a progressive and terminal nerve disease. There was no better time than ever to pursue her dream of owning a wine shop\, and when COVID hit New York City the decision to move to their favorite state became clear. In July 2020\, Sally and Steven moved to Denver to conquer their dream of owning the best wine shop the Front Range has ever seen. \nSteven Washuta is a Florida native born in California. While studying engineering a semester in France opened his palate to the wonders of grapes. In 2010 he graduated with a two year degree in Enology and Viticulture from Walla Walla Community College; a small hands-on school which produces and sells their own wine. After a few years in a California cellar he moved to the restaurant side of wine\, working first in San Francisco and then New York City as a sommelier. \nIn New York he ran the wine program for Felidia and then created the beverage program for the new restaurant Portale in 2019. In 2018 he passed the Master Sommelier exam\, making him one of fewer than 200 with the title in the USA. The unexpected changes of 2020 brought him to Denver with Sally to realize the dream of running their own small wine store. \nLearn more about Denver Wine Merchant at denverwinemerchant.com or follow them on Instagram @denverwinemerchant.

SUMMARY:The Wil Alston Band at the Denver Press Club
DESCRIPTION:Wil Alston has quickly established a solid footing in Denver’s jazz scene. Debuting in 2013 to a sellout performance at Lannie’s Clock Tower Cabaret in downtown Denver\, Wil brings a velvet smooth baritone voice that delivers classic and contemporary jazz standards with grace and richness. Wil has become known as a respected songwriter that pours his heart and his many experiences into his songs and his performances. Not willing to be boxed into a specific genre\, Wil says his music blurs the lines between traditional jazz\, gospel\, and R&B. \nMany know Wil as a community leader and veteran marketing/PR professional\, but may not know of his love for music and singing. He began singing as a child in Washington\, D.C.\, and for close to three decades he has been a lead vocalist in the music department at one of Denver’s most prominent African American churches – the New Hope Baptist Church.Prior to his debut solo performance at Lannie’s\, Wil spent time as a back-up singer for prominent Denver vocalist Mary Louise Lee. \nWil released his freshman cd in 2018 titled\, “Introducing Wil Alston” and is looking to release his sophmore project tentatively titled\, “The Long Way Around.” \nWil says his musical influences include: Nat King Cole\, Donny Hathaway\, Nancy Wilson\, Dianne Reeves\, Gregory Porter\, Kevin Whalum\, Will Downing\, and Kurt Elling.
