SUMMARY:The Denver Press Club presents "20 Days in Mariupol"
DESCRIPTION:“20 Days in Mariupol” offers a first-person view of the early days of Russia’s invasion of the port city of Mariupol\, Ukraine. It is told through the perspective of Ukrainian-born director and AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov.\n\nA Frontline and AP co-production\, the documentary made its world premiere this year at Sundance\, where it won the 2023 Audience Choice Award. \nYou may remember Chernov’s gripping AP accounts.  One of his dispatches from a year ago began this way:\n\n\n\nMARIUPOL\, Ukraine (AP) — The Russians were hunting us down. They had a list of names\, including ours\, and they were closing in. \n\n\nWe were the only international journalists left in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol\, and we had been documenting its siege by Russian troops for more than two weeks. We were reporting inside the hospital when gunmen began stalking the corridors. Surgeons gave us white scrubs to wear as camouflage. \n\n\nSuddenly at dawn\, a dozen soldiers burst in: “Where are the journalists\, for fuck’s sake?” \n\n\nI looked at their armbands\, blue for Ukraine\, and tried to calculate the odds that they were Russians in disguise. I stepped forward to identify myself. “We’re here to get you out\,” they said. \n\n\nThe walls of the surgery shook from artillery and machine gun fire outside\, and it seemed safer to stay inside. But the Ukrainian soldiers were under orders to take us with them…” \n\n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, there will be opportunities to discuss the film with Ukrainians who fled the conflict zone.\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:The Wind Is Us: The Death that Killed Capote

It chronicles the life of Capote from his days researching his iconic “non-fiction novel” In Cold Blood until his death in 1984. Written by Club Member Mike Broemmel. \n  \nTickets here!

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here!\nOpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT to the public in November 2022 sparked a worldwide conversation on AI that has affected nearly every aspect of daily life. The developments in AI/ML are happening so rapidly that the general public has difficulty keeping up with each new progression and what it really means. Meanwhile\, the leaders in tech (like Sam Altman at OpenAI\, Elon Musk\, and Sam Wozniak at Apple) have called for a pause in its development in order for the legal structure and regulations to catch up to the technology. But would something as simple as a six month moratorium be enough? \nThere seem to be a host of issues that not even a six month pause would help us fix or understand. For example\, we have Congressman asking basic questions about how the internet works; developments in AI models that creators couldn’t predict; hallucinations in responses; and more. It’s been integrated into Social Media as well\, with Snapchat announcing a “My AI” chat bot powered by chatGPT in February\, raising questions around how children and minors interact with this technology. \nObviously we cannot cover all of the important ground in such a short forum\, but we hope this provides a starting point for framing this technology and thinking about its negative and positive repercussions now and in the future.  \nModerator \n\nLarry Ryckman\, Colorado Sun. Larry is Editor and co-founder of The Colorado Sun. Previously he was senior editor at The Denver Post\, managing editor at The Gazette in Colorado Springs and city editor at the Greeley Tribune. Ryckman spent 22 years at The Associated Press\, where he was assistant managing editor\, a national editor and supervisor of the AP’s national desk in New York. He spent nearly four years as a Moscow correspondent for AP and helped cover the fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of a new Russia. He also supervised AP’s coverage of the Columbine High School massacre and directed AP’s coverage of the presidential election recount in Florida in 2000.\n\nPanelists \n\nJim Clarke\, Managing Director – Local Markets @ AP. Jim is an executive at the Associated Press and managing director of local markets. He started with the AP in 1995 as a reporter covering breaking news in Alaska. He’s a former bureau chief and has extensive experience across all aspects of news production\, sales\, and marketing. He also has two lovely daughters\, both of whom turned out much smarter than him.\nJonathan Garini\, Chief Prompt Officer @ Stealth. Jonathan is a venture capitalist and serial entrepreneur. He currently is the chief prompt officer at Stealth\, a large language model/generative AI company. Previously\, he was executive chairman of Xooa\, an enterprise blockchain development platform in Denver. Jonathan has been an active member of many technology forums. His first successful ventures having been in telecommunications. He regularly mentors entrepreneurs and organizations. Jonathan enjoys flying\, mountaineering\, and skiing.\nBen Radford. Ben Radford currently leads AI research and development for a Denver-based software company with a focus on applied computer vision and natural language processing. Previously\, he worked at Twitter on their data and ML platform. In government\, Ben worked on the Department of Defense’s flagship AI/ML initiative and served as a Marine intelligence officer. He lives in the Highlands and enjoys drinking gin and tonics by the fireplace and billiards in the basement (when guests are allowed to appear at the DPC).

SUMMARY:The Georgann Low Trio
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here!\n  \nThe second edition of our new “In the Lounge” series. A great way to see acts in the comfort of our historic Pulitzer Lounge. These shows have very limited seating. \nPlease welcome the Georgann Low Trio\, with Ron Jolly and Ron Bland! \n  \nFrom Georgann’s website: \n“A Colorado native\, I was musically formed by the jazz and big band recordings of my parents. The voice of Ella Fitzgerald blended with the voice of my mother as she sang to me in my crib. Later on\, living in LA and San Francisco\, I was wildly influenced by the music of the ’60s and early ‘70s. It was everywhere and it was powerful.( I remember dancing even without music! ) Because I was living in Laurel Canyon with a fellow who played electric violin on a lot of albums\, I got to hang in the studio with such musicians as Lightnin’ Hopkins\, Mike Bloomfield and Electric Flag\, Neil Young and Crazy Horse\, Joni Mitchell\, and Paul Horn. I spent most of my time creating art in books I carried around with me. SUMMARY:The September Salon
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here!\nYou can’t read the news in Colorado today without running across a headline like this one: “Sharp rise in homelessness across metro Denver area.” Mayor Mike Johnston has pledged to house 1\,000 people before the end of the year. Amidst all of these headlines and proposals\, something gets lost: the people. The Denver Press Club presents its September Salon: “People\, Policy\, & Perspective: Homelessness in Colorado.” Moderated by Kelly Brough\, this discussion will offer you a real-time understanding of the current situation\, an opportunity to meet formerly homeless Denverites\, and the chance to discuss the tough questions about how we solve this crisis as a community. \nResources:\nThe Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates there were 582\,000 people experiencing homelessness in 2022\, an increase of roughly 2\,000 from 2020. HUD’s definition includes both sheltered and unsheltered people. By race\, Pacific Islanders\, Black Americans\, and Native Americans have the highest proportions of homeless people. 24% of all homeless identify as Hispanic\, and veterans also have a slightly higher representation than the average population (20 per 10\,000). In 2022\, 60% of homeless people were men\, 38% were women\, and 1% identified as transgender\, nonbinary\, or questioning. The District of Columbia\, California\, Oregon\, and Vermont have the highest per capita homeless populations. Colorado is number 13 on the list. Generally\, speaking\, higher home prices directly correlate to a higher percentage of homelessness. Washington\, D.C.\, with median home value of nearly $700\,000 has 65 homeless people per 10\,000 residents. Colorado\, which has a median home price of $466\,000\, has a homeless population of 17.6 per 10\,000. \n  \n\nWestword’s History of Homelessness in Denver\nColorado Coalition for the Homeless\nHow Houston Moved 25\,000 People from the Streets into Their Own Homes (NYT Magazine)

SUMMARY:Jennifer S. Levine: Solamente
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nJoin us SEPTEMBER 14TH\, doors at 6:30pm\, for an opening of celebration at the debut of artist Jennifer S. Levine’s newest collection of paintings with written accompaniment.\n\nThe show is called “Solamente”. It is a Spanish word which translates into the English adverb “only”. In the idea of “only”\, it seems a singular construct. But\, as an adverb\, it is a modifier which defines a verb\, phrase or even whole sentence. There’s an isolating interdependence at play when “only” is introduced. To say\, “I am only…” or “If only…” or “Should I only…” we find ourselves in relationships of limitations. And\, that is not a way to live. The body of work in this show is about taking away the “only” and exploring the countless\, immeasurable ways one can express oneself through color and word. The collection is meant to be aspirational. It is meant to be inspirational. The viewer is invited to engage in the pieces both visually\, then spiritually by reading their companion thought-pieces and either agreeing with the artist or having their own completely different interpretation.\n\nSo\, if the show is about engagement then why is it called “Solamente”? Ms. Levine has a simple answer for this\, “I wanted to underscore the importance of what it is to not have qualifiers in your life holding you back. I thought the best way to do that was by entitling the show as a qualifier\, a direct point and counterpoint in your face… and\, being a native Texan\, having studied Spanish at such a young age\, ‘solamente’ was the first word that came to mind\, gave the concept more poignancy.”\n\nTo further this idea of living in agency over restraint and inviting guests into her process\, Ms. Levine came up with a novel interactive element for her upcoming show. She will have a large canvas and paints setup in the middle of the room for folks to join in on a collaborative piece. At the end of the evening\, she’ll take home the started painting to finish while posting pictures of her progress so everyone can follow along online. But that isn’t all that is in store for opening night\, special guest Valerie Bhat will be performing. This local singer and songwriter out of Boulder is a rare gem. She’ll be singing from her original songbook\, along with a couple collaborative pieces inspired by paintings in the show at every half hour.\n
