SUMMARY:Rocky Mountain Dylan Fest
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nSince a chance meeting at the University of Denver\, Andy Hill and Renee Safier have carved out a unique niche for themselves in the Los Angeles music scene and beyond. Their performances – more than two hundred a year – are as much social gathering as musical event. Part fan family reunion\, part rock & roll tent revival\, their incomparable live shows attract a large\, enthusiastic\, and fiercely loyal group of fans. Andy and Renee provide a much-needed connection with live music to their audiences\, whether in an intimate House Concert setting or at a large festival. Their music never fails to move you\, your feet\, your heart\, and most often\, all three. \nAs a songwriter\, Andy Hill is a student of the folk and rock classics – Van Morrison\, The Band\, Neil Young\, Bruce Springsteen\, Paul Simon\, and Bob Dylan – and it shows. Both Andy & Renee have received numerous awards for their songwriting. Boundary-pushing use of language\, sweeping vocal harmonies\, unforgettable melodic content\, and tightly crafted arrangements are hallmarks of their writing and producing style. \nRenee Safier\, showcasing her prodigious blues and jazz vocal chops\, was named “Best Solo Blues Artist” at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival\,receiving a rousing response from the 12\,000-plus festival crowd. Since then\, she and Andy have returned for many years giving successful performances during the 3-day festival. Andy & Renee have also performed New Zealand\, Ireland\, Italy Thailand\, The Philippines\, China\, and across North America to approving crowds. \nAs well as being riveting vocalists\, Andy & Renee both play guitars and keyboard\, Andy additionally showcasing his harmonica skills while performing Dylan and others. Along with their band Hard Rain\, they have taken their unique sound and multi-instrumental skills to venues large and small all over the world. Local Southern California highlights include playing the House of Blues\, The Wiltern\, The Troubadour\, The Roxy and theEl Rey Theatre in Hollywood\, and The Warner Grand\, The Grand Annex\, the Torrance and Hermosa Beach Civic Cultural Centers and theHermosa Beach Summer Concert Series. They have also played at the Telluride Blues & Brews\, Kerrville Folk\, Napa Valley Folk\, and High Sierra Songwriter’s Festivals. Their PBS Concert Special\, “Black Box Opens-Andy & Renee”\, filmed at the ATLAS Black Box Theatre at the University of Colorado\, Boulder\, recently won a Heartland Emmy. \nTheir seventeen independent CD releases have won them countless awards\, including: Los Angeles Music Awards “Americana Group of the Year”\, “Best Duo/Group” at the International Acoustic Music Awards\, Qweevak.com “Top-40 CDs of the Year\, Runner-Up for Best Folk Act at the Crossroads Music Awards\, and a two year run in the Musician Magazine “Best Unsigned Band” Semifinals. Since 1998\, they have teamed up with country music legendary sideman\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer/engineer Marty Rifkin\, and together they recorded their next 12 CDs\, including “It Takes a Lot to Laugh”\, a highly acclaimed collection of 14 Bob Dylan songs. When he isn’t traveling the world with Bruce Springsteen or recording the soundtrack to “Man of Steel”\, Marty often performs and travels with Andy & Renee in Southern California and beyond. \nIn addition to all this\, Andy Hill and Renee Safier will be celebrating their 32nd year hosting their own Bob Dylan music festival\, “Dylanfest”. What initially started out as a small once-a-year backyard party where a loose conglomerate of close friends took turns performing Dylan classics all day and well into the night (or until the cops came)\, has now evolved into a full-blown music festival attended by hundreds of fans and featuring over 70 of L.A.’s top musicians. The 8-hour event will be held at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center\, Saturday\, June 4th. \n

SUMMARY:The September Salon
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here!\nYou can’t read the news in Colorado today without running across a headline like this one: “Sharp rise in homelessness across metro Denver area.” Mayor Mike Johnston has pledged to house 1\,000 people before the end of the year. Amidst all of these headlines and proposals\, something gets lost: the people. The Denver Press Club presents its September Salon: “People\, Policy\, & Perspective: Homelessness in Colorado.” Moderated by Kelly Brough\, this discussion will offer you a real-time understanding of the current situation\, an opportunity to meet formerly homeless Denverites\, and the chance to discuss the tough questions about how we solve this crisis as a community. \nResources:\nThe Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates there were 582\,000 people experiencing homelessness in 2022\, an increase of roughly 2\,000 from 2020. HUD’s definition includes both sheltered and unsheltered people. By race\, Pacific Islanders\, Black Americans\, and Native Americans have the highest proportions of homeless people. 24% of all homeless identify as Hispanic\, and veterans also have a slightly higher representation than the average population (20 per 10\,000). In 2022\, 60% of homeless people were men\, 38% were women\, and 1% identified as transgender\, nonbinary\, or questioning. The District of Columbia\, California\, Oregon\, and Vermont have the highest per capita homeless populations. Colorado is number 13 on the list. Generally\, speaking\, higher home prices directly correlate to a higher percentage of homelessness. Washington\, D.C.\, with median home value of nearly $700\,000 has 65 homeless people per 10\,000 residents. Colorado\, which has a median home price of $466\,000\, has a homeless population of 17.6 per 10\,000. \n  \n\nWestword’s History of Homelessness in Denver\nColorado Coalition for the Homeless\nHow Houston Moved 25\,000 People from the Streets into Their Own Homes (NYT Magazine)

SUMMARY:Jennifer S. Levine: Solamente
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nJoin us SEPTEMBER 14TH\, doors at 6:30pm\, for an opening of celebration at the debut of artist Jennifer S. Levine’s newest collection of paintings with written accompaniment.\n\nThe show is called “Solamente”. It is a Spanish word which translates into the English adverb “only”. In the idea of “only”\, it seems a singular construct. But\, as an adverb\, it is a modifier which defines a verb\, phrase or even whole sentence. There’s an isolating interdependence at play when “only” is introduced. To say\, “I am only…” or “If only…” or “Should I only…” we find ourselves in relationships of limitations. And\, that is not a way to live. The body of work in this show is about taking away the “only” and exploring the countless\, immeasurable ways one can express oneself through color and word. The collection is meant to be aspirational. It is meant to be inspirational. The viewer is invited to engage in the pieces both visually\, then spiritually by reading their companion thought-pieces and either agreeing with the artist or having their own completely different interpretation.\n\nSo\, if the show is about engagement then why is it called “Solamente”? Ms. Levine has a simple answer for this\, “I wanted to underscore the importance of what it is to not have qualifiers in your life holding you back. I thought the best way to do that was by entitling the show as a qualifier\, a direct point and counterpoint in your face… and\, being a native Texan\, having studied Spanish at such a young age\, ‘solamente’ was the first word that came to mind\, gave the concept more poignancy.”\n\nTo further this idea of living in agency over restraint and inviting guests into her process\, Ms. Levine came up with a novel interactive element for her upcoming show. She will have a large canvas and paints setup in the middle of the room for folks to join in on a collaborative piece. At the end of the evening\, she’ll take home the started painting to finish while posting pictures of her progress so everyone can follow along online. But that isn’t all that is in store for opening night\, special guest Valerie Bhat will be performing. This local singer and songwriter out of Boulder is a rare gem. She’ll be singing from her original songbook\, along with a couple collaborative pieces inspired by paintings in the show at every half hour.\n

SUMMARY:Enstrom Tasting Series: Mezcal Tasting and Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nThe Denver Press Club’s Enstrom Tasting Series returns with a very special mezcal tasting and screening of Stephen Werk’s Sons of Mezcal. \nMezcal is more than an intoxicating spirit. It is the sacred link that binds modern-day mezcaleros to their ancestors.  Sons of Mezcal transports you into this living history\, as it follows four families passing their traditions on to the next generation. \nSons of Mezcal highlights the lives of four families from four different villages in Oaxaca; The Cortés\, Vásquez\, Méndez\, and Parada families. Casa Cortés works with 17 different families in 16 different regions for the production of its mezcals. Several of the individuals in the film are members of the Cortés family\, while the other featured mezcaleros are from their own families. However\, all the families featured in the documentary work together as part of a tightly-knit community of mezcal producers that provide the foundations for the El Jolgorio\, Nuestra Soledad\, and Agave de Cortés brands of mezcal. \nJoin us for a tasting of Nuestra Soledad and Agave de Cortés mezcals accompanied by a chicken mole dinner and a Q&A with the filmmaker\, Stephan Werk.
