SUMMARY:Jesse Maclaine and the Scotch: 100 years of Love and Loss
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here! \n$10 entry for members. $20 for non-members. \nAdditonal $12 for buffet dinner. \nJesse Maclaine & the Scotch: The Duo… Jesse Maclaine and Jon Ham are two classically trained musicians who went rogue and are now running amok in the worlds of pop\, rock\, folk and jazz music. Their classical leanings shine through and broaden their interpretations of timelessly popular songs\, as well as adding a special glimmer to their unique and mesmerizing original songs.\n\nJesse’s brilliant mezzo soprano and piano mesh flawlessly with Jon’s organic vocal harmonies and prodigious skills on multiple string instruments. Both of these artists are witty\, sharp\, highly experienced musicians and their concerts reflect the complex emotional spectrum of the human experience with bursts of spontaneous – sometimes irreverent – levity\, yet they’re always centered in their intense love of music.\n\nThis debut appearance at the Denver Press Club offers a panoply of songs from the 1920s-2023 and because it’s the day after Valentine’s Day\, the concert is aptly themed “100 Years of Love and Loss.” Find Jesse Maclaine and the Scotch on your preferred music streaming service to listen to their exciting new releases. Follow Jesse Maclaine & the Scotch on social media for a sneak peek into the setlist and featured songs for this concert! www.jessemaclaine.com

SUMMARY:The February Salon: Political Polarization & The Primary Paradox
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nThe news is full of discussions of political polarization and Americans increasingly losing faith in the very system of democracy. The situation seems hopeless. Or is it? What if there were political reforms that could reinvigorate our elections and bring more people into the process? What if we could reintroduce competition into our electoral process\, giving voters the opportunity to select candidates they truly believe in and not just vote for the “lesser of two evils”? The Denver Press Club with Veterans for All Voters presents a panel on political innovation in the 21st century. Come interact with Lisa Feret\, Todd Connor\, and Nick Troiano as they discuss why we can all get excited and involved in reinvigorating our democracy.

SUMMARY:Trusted Sources Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here!\nWe’re very happy to announce a special rough-cut screening of Trusted Sources\, a forthcoming film by Colorado filmmaker Don Colacino\, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. \nWith trust in news in decline since the 1970s and local news outlets disappearing at more than two per week\, ‘free’ online information is crowding out professional journalism.  Agenda-driven content\, often disguised as news\, further erodes trust\, allowing mis- and disinformation to divide our nation against itself.  Our democracy is under threat. Trusted Sources shows how we arrived at this point\, how to find trustworthy news\, and ways to protect professional journalism.  It features journalists and trust experts from Colorado and across the country who share their journalistic standards and work to increase news literacy. \nThe screening is free for members and their guest and limited to 20 attendees\, so please sign up now to secure a spot. Attendees are entitled to a glass of beer or wine on the producer’s tab\, and will be asked to fill out a survey about the film.

SUMMARY:Enstrom Tasting Series: Mezcal Tasting and Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nThe Denver Press Club’s Enstrom Tasting Series returns with a very special mezcal tasting and screening of Stephen Werk’s Sons of Mezcal. \nMezcal is more than an intoxicating spirit. It is the sacred link that binds modern-day mezcaleros to their ancestors.  Sons of Mezcal transports you into this living history\, as it follows four families passing their traditions on to the next generation. \nSons of Mezcal highlights the lives of four families from four different villages in Oaxaca; The Cortés\, Vásquez\, Méndez\, and Parada families. Casa Cortés works with 17 different families in 16 different regions for the production of its mezcals. Several of the individuals in the film are members of the Cortés family\, while the other featured mezcaleros are from their own families. However\, all the families featured in the documentary work together as part of a tightly-knit community of mezcal producers that provide the foundations for the El Jolgorio\, Nuestra Soledad\, and Agave de Cortés brands of mezcal. \nJoin us for a tasting of Nuestra Soledad and Agave de Cortés mezcals accompanied by a chicken mole dinner and a Q&A with the filmmaker\, Stephan Werk.

SUMMARY:Jennifer S. Levine: Solamente
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nJoin us SEPTEMBER 14TH\, doors at 6:30pm\, for an opening of celebration at the debut of artist Jennifer S. Levine’s newest collection of paintings with written accompaniment.\n\nThe show is called “Solamente”. It is a Spanish word which translates into the English adverb “only”. In the idea of “only”\, it seems a singular construct. But\, as an adverb\, it is a modifier which defines a verb\, phrase or even whole sentence. There’s an isolating interdependence at play when “only” is introduced. To say\, “I am only…” or “If only…” or “Should I only…” we find ourselves in relationships of limitations. And\, that is not a way to live. The body of work in this show is about taking away the “only” and exploring the countless\, immeasurable ways one can express oneself through color and word. The collection is meant to be aspirational. It is meant to be inspirational. The viewer is invited to engage in the pieces both visually\, then spiritually by reading their companion thought-pieces and either agreeing with the artist or having their own completely different interpretation.\n\nSo\, if the show is about engagement then why is it called “Solamente”? Ms. Levine has a simple answer for this\, “I wanted to underscore the importance of what it is to not have qualifiers in your life holding you back. I thought the best way to do that was by entitling the show as a qualifier\, a direct point and counterpoint in your face… and\, being a native Texan\, having studied Spanish at such a young age\, ‘solamente’ was the first word that came to mind\, gave the concept more poignancy.”\n\nTo further this idea of living in agency over restraint and inviting guests into her process\, Ms. Levine came up with a novel interactive element for her upcoming show. She will have a large canvas and paints setup in the middle of the room for folks to join in on a collaborative piece. At the end of the evening\, she’ll take home the started painting to finish while posting pictures of her progress so everyone can follow along online. But that isn’t all that is in store for opening night\, special guest Valerie Bhat will be performing. This local singer and songwriter out of Boulder is a rare gem. She’ll be singing from her original songbook\, along with a couple collaborative pieces inspired by paintings in the show at every half hour.\n

SUMMARY:The September Salon
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here!\nYou can’t read the news in Colorado today without running across a headline like this one: “Sharp rise in homelessness across metro Denver area.” Mayor Mike Johnston has pledged to house 1\,000 people before the end of the year. Amidst all of these headlines and proposals\, something gets lost: the people. The Denver Press Club presents its September Salon: “People\, Policy\, & Perspective: Homelessness in Colorado.” Moderated by Kelly Brough\, this discussion will offer you a real-time understanding of the current situation\, an opportunity to meet formerly homeless Denverites\, and the chance to discuss the tough questions about how we solve this crisis as a community. \nResources:\nThe Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates there were 582\,000 people experiencing homelessness in 2022\, an increase of roughly 2\,000 from 2020. HUD’s definition includes both sheltered and unsheltered people. By race\, Pacific Islanders\, Black Americans\, and Native Americans have the highest proportions of homeless people. 24% of all homeless identify as Hispanic\, and veterans also have a slightly higher representation than the average population (20 per 10\,000). In 2022\, 60% of homeless people were men\, 38% were women\, and 1% identified as transgender\, nonbinary\, or questioning. The District of Columbia\, California\, Oregon\, and Vermont have the highest per capita homeless populations. Colorado is number 13 on the list. Generally\, speaking\, higher home prices directly correlate to a higher percentage of homelessness. Washington\, D.C.\, with median home value of nearly $700\,000 has 65 homeless people per 10\,000 residents. Colorado\, which has a median home price of $466\,000\, has a homeless population of 17.6 per 10\,000. \n  \n\nWestword’s History of Homelessness in Denver\nColorado Coalition for the Homeless\nHow Houston Moved 25\,000 People from the Streets into Their Own Homes (NYT Magazine)
