BOOK BEAT AND LUNCH ON DEADLINE

From the beginning, the Denver Press Club has been a place to meet interesting people and take stock of the marketplace of ideas.

The preamble to our 1905 bylaws stated that part of our mission is to attract visiting authors and journalists and contribute to the intellectual stimulation of the community.

CLAMBAKE

We hold this in late August, with a great menu of clams dishes, salmon, salad, Carmen’s outstanding homemade clam chowder, and more. And we have it OUTSIDE, in the parking lot between the DPC and the Colorado Press Association. The 2009 Clambake also featured great entertainment by Western singer Lloyd Morris.

SINATRA NIGHT

This is a Carmen invention, combining his great Italian food spread with a Sinatra impersonator.

LOBSTER NIGHT

We hold this in the winter months, to help break up it-gets-dark-early days of snow and cold.

BOOK SALES

Bargains galore happen at this twice-yearly event. We gather thousands of books from The Denver Post (and formerly, also from the Rocky Mountain News), the Denver Business Journal, Bloomsbury Review, members and other sources.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

The DPC used to fill a field by itself. Though those days are gone, you still can play tournament golf annually, as we have folded our event into the one held by the Colorado Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

MEMBERS’ HOLIDAY PARTY

Held the Friday night of the Parade of Lights, this popular event draws a large number of club members and their family members. It features an outstanding food spread that Carmen creates, as well as the opportunity to step outside and watch the end of the Parade of Lights.

JEOPARDY NIGHT

We revived this in July 2009 and intend to make it an annual event. Club member Dan Haley, who is in charge of The Denver Post editorial pages, won this year’s contest. We held three games, then placed the winner of each game into the finale.

DEATH FOR DINNER (Murder Mystery Theater)

We’ve held this twice, and it’s just what it says it is: Have dinner, then help solve a murder mystery, thanks to professional area thespians.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

We had Fireside chats, JUMP (for those transitioning from journalism into other fields), a daylong seminar from the Reynolds Center, New Media Wednesdays. And watch for more. It’s part of the club’s commitment to further journalism education.
